LEGAL CLERKSHIPS, Animal Protection Litigation

Seeking several conscientious law students for unpaid Spring 2010 legal clerkships within the Animal Protection Litigation Section in our Washington, D.C., office. Law clerks will work closely with attorneys and be integrally involved in the process of researching, preparing and prosecuting animal protection lawsuits in state and federal courts. Law clerks must have excellent legal writing and research skills. Although experience in animal protection and/or environmental law is preferred, we are primarily interested in working with students who are resourceful, innovative and productive, and who have a strong interest in animal protection litigation. INTERNS, Research & Analysis

Research & Analysis, which conducts research on behalf of the campaign and program sections, seeks interns for the Fall/Winter of 2009. DIRECTOR OF PLANNED GIVING, Department of Philanthropy

The Director develops, implements and manages ongoing marketing programs to promote planned and estate giving on behalf of the organization. He or she identifies and develops cultivation/solicitation strategies, and actively engages in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of selected prospects through personal contacts/visits. Additionally, the position works closely with the overall Development Department and Senior Management. The Director plans and directs the work of the Planned Giving Department and is responsible for establishing overall objectives and priorities for the department on a long-term and annual basis; actively seeks out marketing opportunities for new partnership initiatives to facilitate direct contact with major donors; ensures that all major and planned giving donors receive appropriate, consistent recognition and an accounting of the impact that their gift has on the organization's mission; develops innovative recognition opportunities and materials. He or she prepares and delivers speeches, workshops and presentations to individuals, chapters, units, and boards extensively throughout the year. A university degree in a related field is required, with specialized knowledge related to planned giving and major gifts fund-raising, including a working knowledge of charitable tax law, finance and estate planning tools and techniques. The successful candidate will possess a minimum of ten years of combined leadership, major gift, and planned giving and estates fund-raising management experience including five years in management with a not-for-profit organization involving a significant number of people and organizations with diverse and varied interests and backgrounds. Proven fund-raising, leadership and consensus building skills a must; ability to lead and motivate groups and individuals; excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills; and an ability to listen effectively is essential. INTERNS, Campaigns

The Campaigns section of The Humane Society of the United States seeks interns to provide assistance on key projects necessary to the furtherance of our goals in the Animal Cruelty and Fighting, Factory Farming, Fur Free, Wildlife Abuse, and Stop Puppy Mills campaigns, as well as our Animals and Religion program. The intern will focus most of his or her time on one campaign and will be trained in the integral work of campaigning for animals, including completing an online Humane Society University course. Tasks include: constituent outreach and organizing, research, and drafting campaign material both for website and media pieces. No specific academic major is required; however, preferred candidates will have a strong work ethic, be willing to take on any project, and possess strong writing skills. INTERNS, Online Communications

Online Communications is seeking editorial and production interns. The editorial intern will work directly with website managing editors and program content managers to develop articles and content for our website. This editorial/writing internship requires excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Responsibilities include: reviewing and editing articles submitted by programs; drafting new stories as assigned by managing editors; performing research, interviews, fact checking and reference as needed; assisting with content review and page migration; and identifying redundancies in material. The production intern will work directly with website managing editors and program content managers to format, update and create web pages as assigned. This position requires basic HTML and image editing skills as well as familiarity with (or ability to learn) a content management system. Responsibilities include: creating and formatting new pages as assigned; creating, modifying or formatting embedded multimedia (video, slideshows, and images); assisting in prepping and transferring pages from current publishing platform to new content management system; troubleshooting problems with coding/formatting; and identifying redundancies in material. INTERNS, Field Services

The New York Field Services office seeks interns to provide assistance on key projects to the furtherance of our goals in animal protection policy and campaigns in New York State. The intern will focus most of his or her time on public outreach activities in New York City to build constituent support to take legislative and campaign actions. Tasks include: organizing literature tables at events, festivals and high-traffic locales, conducting public outreach activities in targeted legislative districts, and phone-banking to constituents to contact their legislators about pending animal protection legislation. RANCH HAND, Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch

The Humane Society of the United States is seeking a Ranch Hand for the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch located in Murchison, TX. The main responsibilities of this position are to clean animal enclosures/pens; feed/water animals; repair/renovate existing enclosures and assist with the construction of new facilities; perform landscaping/groundskeeping duties; assist with the humane capture and handling of animals; and carefully observe animals for signs of illness/injury.  A high school education or its equivalent along with a farm or agricultural background required.  One must be able to lift/move 50 to 75 lbs.; must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions; must have ability to work weekends and holidays; must have strong commitment to being a team player. Experience with livestock care, and preferably equine is highly desired. ONLINE DATABASE ANALYST, Online Communications

ANIMAL CARE TECHNICIANS, Cape Wildlife Center

PROGRAMMER/ANALYST, Information Systems & Technology

WILDLIFE REHABILITATOR/VETERINARY TECHNICIAN, Cape Wildlife Center

The main responsibilities of this position will be to manage the Cape Wildlife Center’s wildlife clinic on a daily basis and wildlife rehabilitation activities and veterinary technical support; be responsible for emergency response support and approximately 20 student externs and four seasonal staff per year. Other duties include, but are not limited to: admits and assesses sick and injured animals and arranges for veterinary assessment/treatment; ensures safe handling of animals; supervises and trains volunteers as well as student externs and seasonal staff; trains and supervises the Center’s staff in answering telephone calls about humane solutions, rescues, reunions, renesting; manages inventories and purchasing of veterinary and rehabilitative supplies and equipment; ensures maintenance of cleanliness and orderliness of the clinic, wards and enclosures; completes admission paperwork, maintains daily records and ensures accuracy of annual, state and federal rehabilitation reports on a yearly basis. DIRECTOR FARM ANIMALS, Humane Society International

STAFF VETERINARIAN, SPCA Wildlife Care Center

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a staff veterinarian for their Wildlife Care Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The main responsibilities of this position will be to provide health/medical/surgical care to resident animals. Other duties include, but are not limited to: perform medical checks/rounds as required; maintain licenses and permits as required by state and federal law; maintain clinic records/data; manage triage of incoming animals; supervise treatment of hospitalized patients and the veterinary care of orphaned wildlife.  The center treats a wide variety of native and exotic wildlife and also exotic domestic animals.
