The HSUS's Animal Rescue Team works with law enforcement to investigate illegal animal cruelty, targeting the worst cases of animal abuse nationwide. Every year we rescue thousands of animals from puppy mills, animal fighting operations, hoarders, and other situations where animals suffer from life-threatening cruelty. We also provide expert animal rescue response at natural disasters.
Tennessee Walking Horses Rescued From Abuse
The HSUS helped authorities rescue 19 horses who may have been subjected to cruel “soring” from a Maryville, Tenn., barn. Soring is the application of caustic chemicals and painful devices to the hooves and legs of horses to produce an artificial high-stepping gait.
