Media Relations Intern—Humane Society International
The Communications department has an opportunity for an intern (click to view expanded position description) who desires real-world experience in media relations. One of the department’s important functions is to serve as a resource for journalists, disseminating news on a broad range of animal issues and arranging media interviews with subject experts at Humane Society International (HSI).
The intern will gain experience writing press releases and preparing other written documents for the media, using Vocus software to target reporters for pitches, making calls to reporters to garner interest in HSI stories and working on long-term media campaigns. The individual will be invited to join daily strategic department meetings and will be brought in to help with larger, more complex projects that will foster teamwork and encourage creative thinking.
Ideal candidates have a desire to learn about media relations, possess strong communication skills, and work well independently. Previous experience in a non-profit organization, animal protection/advocacy organization, or animal shelter is a plus. Proficiency in more than one language is also a plus.
The minimum time commitment is 15 hours per week for approximately 12 weeks. Interns may arrange to receive course credit. A commuting stipend corresponding to number of days worked (maximum $50/week) is available.

Interns must pass a criminal background check and sign a waiver and release of liability. The position is located in our Gaithersburg, Md. office.
