Interns, Public Relations
The Public Relations department, which serves as a resource for journalists, disseminating news on a broad range of animal issues and arranging media interviews with subject experts at The HSUS, is seeking interns (click to view expanded position description) who desire real-world experience in public relations.
Interns will gain experience writing press releases and preparing other written documents for the media, using Vocus software to target reporters for pitches, making calls to reporters to garner interest in HSUS stories and working on long-term media campaigns with members of our diverse Public Relations team. Each intern will be invited to join daily strategic PR meetings and will be brought in to help with larger, more complex projects that will foster teamwork and encourage creative thinking.
Ideal candidates have a desire to learn about public relations, possess strong communication skills, and work well independently. Previous experience in a non-profit organization, animal protection/advocacy organization, or animal shelter is a plus. Spanish proficiency is also a plus. Minimum time commitment is 10 hours per week for approximately 12 weeks.
This internship is unpaid; however, course credit can be arranged. Interns must pass a criminal background check and sign a waiver and release of liability. The position is located in our Gaithersburg, Md., office.
