Veterinarian, Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has an exciting position for a qualified Veterinarian to join our team as Lead Veterinarian on a permanent full time basis for its Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch (BBR) in Murchison, Texas – the nation’s largest and most diverse animal sanctuary. The successful candidate will be responsible for proactively managing the health of the Sanctuary’s more than 40 species of rescued animals. Other duties include, but are not limited to: implementing a preventive veterinary care program in a new, state of the art hospital; conducting examinations of animals to identify existing and potential medical issues; performing routine surgeries as needed; conducting routine hematological analyses and fecal exams to assess health, observing and identifying potential disease or medical problems or injury; overseeing herd health management and assess the efficacy of worming program; overseeing medical care of horses from intake into full quarantine facilities to adoption at our adoption center; teaching sanctuary staff and externs basic veterinary care procedures and techniques; managing veterinary hospital including veterinary record keeping and equipment, including digital radiography, ultrasound, laboratory and full surgery; interfacing with local and university veterinarians to ensure that ranch animals are receiving the best possible care; working closely with BBR Director to ensure optimal health and quality of life for all animals; working with other HSUS staff to develop practical veterinary programs to address important animal welfare issues; advising and updating BBR Director and HSUS management on veterinary programs and important animal medical issues. The ideal candidate will have experience in managing a diversity of species and a commitment to establishing the highest standards of care and welfare. The position will suit an individual who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary institution and working beyond the traditions of private, zoo, or equine practice. The successful candidate must have a D.V.M. or V.M.D. degree from an accredited school of veterinary medicine. Candidate must hold a current veterinary license in the state of Texas, or be able to secure one. The candidate should have at least six to eight years of extensive experience in routine veterinary surgery and medicine. Experience in equine management including hoof, dental, and geriatric care is preferred; have knowledge and experience diagnosing and treating a variety of animal diseases and injuries in equines, non-domestic and domestic swine, and bovines; must be confident and willing to work with exotic animals and primates (consulting resources are available); the ability to work independently within a team environment; a flexible schedule for monitoring recovery as needed and be on call for center emergencies.
