Animal Caregiver II, Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking an Animal Caregiver II in the equine department for its Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch. Commitment to the goals and programs of the HSUS along with the highest quality animal care skills required. Must have the ability to follow directions and record observations; communicate with other staff members and supervisors; identify changes in animal behavior or medical status. Minimum 3 years’ experience working with equine and high school diploma required. Experience working with large equine herds and wild mustangs a plus. Bachelor’s degree in biology, ranch management, animal science, or similar field preferred but may be substituted with an additional 3 years equine experience. This position involves substantial animal husbandry responsibilities, limited basic medical work, and some administrative duties (record keeping). Day-to-day responsibilities include feeding, cleaning stalls and pastures, monitoring behavior, enclosure maintenance and enrichment activities. Animal Caregivers also work with and mentor interns. Proof of negative TB test is required. Tetanus and Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations are recommended. Desired candidates are mature individuals with the ability to handle physically and emotionally stressful situations, a demanding work load and long hours, and work independently or as a team. Must be able to move/lift 50 to 75 pounds; to work outdoors in variable weather conditions and to work with a variety of equine breeds and temperaments.
