The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking an associate editor for All Animals, its bimonthly magazine for HSUS members, and for other outlets including the HSUS annual report and website. The associate editor reports, researches, and writes stories ranging from long-form, in-depth features to short profiles and how-to pieces. Other duties include, but are not limited to: managing production of the All Animals web pages; producing the Community section of All Animals (responding to reader submissions, compiling supporter feedback, and writing profiles, updates, and other pieces as assigned); working with the editing and design teams to develop compelling digital extras for All Animals’ tablet publication; following assigned beats and generating story ideas; and copyediting and proofing magazine business reply envelopes and other pieces as assigned. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, English, communications, or a related field; three-four years’ experience producing compelling, thorough, and accurate stories on deadline. The ideal candidate will have a passion for confronting animal cruelty and telling stories that inform and inspire; the ability to conceptualize, plan, and produce effective web packages within a content management system environment; the ability to produce multimedia components such as video interviews and audio slideshows; and the ability to copyedit and proof for style, grammar, organization, clarity, and conciseness.
