Coordinator, Federal Affairs

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Coordinator, Federal Affairs, who will work closely with the Federal Affairs team to provide organization and support for federal policy endeavors.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Coordinating the intern program which entails overseeing the daily activities of interns, supplying guidance and details for projects and reviewing progress;
  • Providing administrative assistance regarding submission of communication and Animal Protection Litigation (APL) requests, and maintaining correspondence lists for congressional offices;
  • Monitoring the introduction of bills, notice of hearings and votes, notices for agency rules, policies, and audits and providing the information to the appropriate staff in HSLF, APL, and programs/campaigns;
  • Preparing and maintaining legislative and regulatory documents including priority factsheets, cosponsor lists, endorsement lists, and agency briefing documents;
  • Drafting grassroots alerts and social media posts for legislative and regulatory actions in coordination with HSLF/HSUS communications staff;
  • Coordinating event planning to include, Taking Action for Animals (TAFA)/Lobby Day, annual Congressional Humane Awards reception, and Congressional Animal Protection Caucus briefings;
  • Providing research needed to support legislative and regulatory actions;
  • Overseeing all aspects of putting together the annual Humane Scorecard including regularly maintaining cosponsor and leadership information for the Humane Scorecard;
  • Assisting with all accounting requests and providing general office support.

Qualifications:

  • College degree preferred or equivalent experience;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • General understanding of regulatory and legislative process;
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member;
  • Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software (Word, Excel), presentation software (PowerPoint);
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
  • Provide guidance to interns.
