Culinary Specialist - Pacific Region (West Coast)

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Culinary Specialist, Pacific Region (West Coast) for the Campaigns department. The main responsibility of this position is to work with major food service providers and institutions to create and develop humane plant-based culinary programs and educate food service professionals on the benefits of offfering more humane menu options and represent the organization at food industry conferences and events within the Pacific/West Coast region.

Responsibilities:

  • Creating curricula, schedules, and conduct plant-based culinary programs for institutional food service providers to include conducting hands on workshops and demonstrations, helping institutions design menus and assisting with the development and delivery of marketing and institutional communication programs;
  • Establishing relationships and conducting live and web, culinary education presentations, and working with institutions and companies toward the goal of developing plant-based culinary initiatives;
  • Drafting and coordinating support materials to include the development of training materials, toolkits and case studies;
  • Developing relationships with culinary institutions like the Culinary Institute of America, the Food and Beverage Institute, and others, to influence the development of plant-based culinary education programs;
  • Serving as a spokesperson by performing interviews and televised cooking demos;
  • Assisting with other campaign work as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in the culinary industry required;
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in institutional food service required;
  • Must have ability to build/foster relationships and demonstrate high standards of tact;
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills to effectively interact with and influence others both internal and external to The HSUS;
  • Ability to facilitate meetings and conduct public speaking/presentations;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Must have attention to detail and commitment to excellence along with knowledge of food and foodservice industry procurement;
  • Knowledge about factory farming, nutrition/health and environmental issues a plus;
  • Must be willing and able to travel extensively;
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with flexibility and ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables.
