Deputy Manager, Animal Crimes
The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization is seeking a Deputy Manager, Animal Crimes for the Animal Rescue team. The main responsibility of this position is to work with law enforcement, animal care agencies, constituents, and/or the public to address egregious situations of animal cruelty, with the intent to remove the animals from crisis.
This position will be responsible for:
- Providing best practices for effective case management and animal documentation to the responsible agencies caring for the animals after intervention;
- Responding to complaints of animal cruelty as well as working with law enforcement officials to determine proper response;
- Evaluating each complaint to determine the level of response by Animal Rescue Team (ART) and responding to complaints of animal cruelty;
- Providing guidance and resources to law enforcement and animal control agencies responding to issues of cruelty, to include puppy mills, animal fighting, and large scale cruelty;
- Maintaining database of cruelty complaints and consistent internal communication with State Affairs and HSUS staff on cruelty issues that can provide species-specific expertise to ART.
- Working with the Manager, Animal Crimes, and the Senior Director, to continue to build network of such organizations and individuals who can assist when responding to equine/farm animal cruelty cases for the purpose of care and placement of seized animals;
- Contributing to the content of existing law enforcement and animal care training programs utilized by the HSUS and present these training modules, when requested;
- Representing ART at relevant conferences and events.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field required;
- Minimum three years of experience working as a humane law enforcement officer;
- Specialized knowledge of farm animals and equine care;
- Proven ability to liaise with governmental organizations and partnering organizations;
- A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to HSUS, as well as for facilitating meetings and conducting public speaking/presentations;
- Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member;
- Ability to travel on very short notice to assist in a disaster response as requested and must be able to be on the road a number of days a month and to work outside standard business hours;
- Ability to handle physical aspects of the job to include, but not limited to: walking, jumping, reaching, moving, and lifting objects;
- Ability to work around a wide variety of animals and in physically demanding environments;
- Ability to work under pressure;
- Ability to cope with ambiguity, make reasoned decisions with limited information available, and effectively demonstrate ability to handle emergencies with a calm demeanor;
- Demonstrated ability to adapt best practices to our organizational needs;
- Ability to take initiative, and maintain good communication with other HSUS staff;
- Knowledge of animal protection issues working knowledge and experience with NIMS/ICS or commitment to take and pass required courses within six months;
- Animal handling skills and knowledge of animal protection issues such as animal control, shelter experience, and particularly animals under stress.
