Director, Celebrity & Entertainment Outreach

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Director, Celebrity and Entertainment Outreach for the Outreach and Engagement department. This position will work with the Senior Director of External Affairs to provide strategic leadership and oversight of the celebrity engagement program and coordination among celebrity relationship managers and develop long-term strategies to engage celebrities, the entertainment community, and others, to meet the policy and program goals of the organization.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Identifying, cultivating and managing new and existing celebrity and entertainment community relationships to broaden the exposure of HSUS’ brand and creating strategic opportunities for program and fundraising impact;
  • Remaining up to date on all of the organization’s priority policy and program goals as well as positions on issues; working closely with Programs to identify strategic opportunities for celebrity support as warranted; communicating this information to celebrity supporters and the entertainment community to cultivate the relationship, raise awareness and gain further support;
  • Creating meaningful, inspiring, authentic, newsworthy engagement strategies for celebrities to support the organization’s programs and priorities with a particular emphasis on retaining, strengthening and increasing celebrity supporter relationships, as well as managing mutually beneficial partnerships that maximize the celebrity’s involvement and impact on our work;
  • Participating in and providing guidance/expertise in event committee meetings for galas and other events; enlisting celebrities to represent our work at events by assisting in script writing and draft copy for celebrities, sound bites, liaising with PR firms to manage reg carpet events, photo and news release distributions, etc.;
  • Partnering with Philanthropy and other departments, producing fundraising events in California and elsewhere to showcase the organization’s work and achievements, as well as expanding the organization’s donor base by working to engage celebrities as donors to HSUS’ work;
  • Pursuing the organization’s long-standing work to encourage, recognize, publicize and reward positive and compassionate portrayals of animals in entertainment media; encouraging broadcast and film portrayals of the work and leadership of The HSUS, and providing organizational leadership in matters of entertainment media;
  • Maintaining a close relationship with the Communications team regarding media relations, including news media and nonfiction television and film media;
  • Managing staff to include goal-setting and ensuring goals are met as well as monitoring performance and fostering an environment that encourages growth and development.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum of eight years of relevant functional work experience required along with five years of management experience also required;
  • Must have thorough knowledge of and commitment to animal protection issues and extensive experience within the entertainment industry;
  • Demonstrated ability in program development management and promotion;
  • Skilled in designing and implementing programs, managing relationships and building community support;
  • Must have excellent communication skills, especially in writing, public speaking, and interpersonal communications;
  • Strong organizational, coordination, supervisory and time management skills;
  • Self-motivation is essential with the ability to continually seek new opportunities to cultivate partnerships and build relationships;
  • Proficiency with MS Office required and ability to perform online research;
  • Must have proven management abilities and budget expertise;
  • Must also have basic knowledge of the legislative process and public policy;
  • Must be able/willing to travel locally and within the United States.
