Director of Philanthropy, Mid-Atlantic

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Director of Philanthropy for its Major Gifts Department. The main responsibility of this role will be identify, cultivate, and solicit major gifts (10k and above) in support of priority campaigns and program initiatives.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Managing a portfolio of major gift prospects at the k and above level in the assigned geographic area using a Moves Management framework;
  • Planning and implementing major donor cultivation and solicitation strategies to secure funding for institutional priorities and to reach annual budgeted goals;
  • Conducting personal donor visits annually to develop positive and purposeful relationships with major donors and prospects;
  • Engaging volunteer and executive leadership, state directors, program, and campaign representatives in major gift fundraising activities, strategically using natural partners in the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts;
  • Working with the VP of Philanthropy to develop an annual plan of major gift solicitations and to develop and evaluate fundraising strategies for top prospects and donors;
  • Maintaining donor data and contacts in the CRM to ensure complete and accurate information on the donor/prospect and the relationship with HSUS;
  • Collaborating with the Philanthropy staff and across the organization to build and sustain a productive and successful major gift fundraising culture;
  • Maintaining advanced knowledge and understanding of development techniques and fundraising best practices to interact capably with donors and their advisors on charitable gifts;
  • Supporting the mission and philosophy of HSUS and maintaining a working knowledge of priority campaigns and programs, as well as relevant local and regional initiatives.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent experience required;
  • Minimum of five years of Development experience with proven success in securing major gifts at the five- figure level required;
  • Demonstrated ability to strategically cultivate and solicit donors and prospects and to communicate the HSUS’ mission and programs in ways that excite and motivate donors;
  • Exceptional talent for building and sustaining relationships, both externally and internally, and for driving results;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to tailor messages to various audiences and to be an effective representative for HSUS;
  • Must be able and willing to travel on a regular basis as well as have availability to work evening and weekend hours.
