Director, Operations - Duchess Sanctuary

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Director, Operations for our Duchess Sanctuary in Oakland Oregon. Under supervision of Senior Director, this position will direct operations of 1120 acre, approx. 200-horse, nonprofit, non-commercial horse and wildlife ranch and sanctuary, applying knowledge of equine science and experience with animal care and ranch management.

This position will also be responsible for

  • Planning and overseeing the execution of general herd health, including for the special needs of wild and rescued horses;
  • Assessing individual animal health for medical treatments and nutritional needs, and assessing and managing needs for graduated care;
  • Supervising land and pasture management, including wildlife accommodations, soil preparations, plantings, fertilizing, and management of culverts and drainage;
  • Formulating ranch budget and managing ranch expenses for review and approval by Senior Director, ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures for purchase and expense approvals;
  • Ensuring compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements as well as Humane Society policies and procedures;
  • Coordinating fundraising and donor cultivation;
  • Performing community outreach, including organizing and hosting public events, speaking and presenting to local fraternal and civic organizations;
  • Planning and executing media exposure and social media utilization, and advise on web content;
  • Overseeing facility management, maintenance of assets, procurement of supplies and materials, and maintenance of necessary licenses and permits;
  • Analyzing and evaluating land capacity and budgetary considerations for animal acquisition;
  • Supervising the work of four employees: Senior Maintenance Technician, Animal Caregiver Specialist, and Animal Caregiver II;
  • Recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and terminating staff and volunteers.


  • Associates degree (or foreign equivalent) in Equine Science or closely related field;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in managing a horse ranch and sanctuary;
  • Experience performing hands-on horse care and assessing animal needs, including nutritional, habitat and socialization requirements for wild horses;
  • Experience executing land management and enrichment activities;
  • Experience preparing for natural disasters and post-disaster relief;
  • Experience collaborating with rehabilitation organizations;
  • Experience moving/handling animals using humane methods;
  • Experience operating trucks, trailers, and other ranch vehicles;
  • Must be able to walk;
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Must be able to work outdoors under all climate conditions, including extreme cold and heat.
