Director, Organizational and Employee Development

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Director, Organizational and Employee Development for the Human Capital and Development department. The primary purpose of this position is managing and supporting individual and organizational performance, assesing organizational needs and designing, implementing, and evaluating programs for professional development and continuous learning in order to achieve company goals.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Leading the design, development, and implementation of Organizational Development (OD) programs and policies to meet organizational and departmental needs.  Will also be responsible for designing and leading those efforts to meet short and long term objectives and evaluate success of the programs against targeted objectives;
  • Directing a “needs-assessment” for training and development of staff to enhance the effectiveness of employee performance;
  • Assisting with facilitation and coaching for supervisors and managers and providing consultation to departments regarding mentoring and coaching; will also coordinate use of external training vendors as needed;
  • Managing individual development plans for key staff in support of succession planning;
  • Preparing budgetary recommendations to assist with goals and for effective management of resources while monitoring spending against budget;
  • Designing and developing HR training programs as needed including learning activities, audio-visual materials, instructor guides and lesson plans;
  • Evaluating training courses, objectives and accomplishments and providing feedback and follow-up of completed training to measure results and modify the programs as needed;
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field required; Ph.D. or Master’s Degree preferred;
  • Senior Professional Human Resources (SPHR) certification desired;
  • Minimum 7 year’s related OD experience within a large organization and/or functional business unit required;
  • Must have demonstrated experience in developing/implementing operational processes; preparing and managing budgets, facilitating and driving innovation, problem-solving and results-oriented via collaboration and team development;
  • Must also have progressive human resources knowledge (all areas) and experience in applying the knowledge to daily situations and with issues of high complexity;
  • Strong knowledge of adult learning methodologies, training and curriculum design, development and delivery, and professional and leadership development;
  • Strong interpersonal skills required along with a high level of confidence and integrity; ability to influence and ability to facilitate and conduct meetings also required;
  • Must have ability to manage conflict and remain in control during difficult situations and in group settings;
  • Must demonstrate creativity and self-motivation in executing assigned accountabilities and show strong business acumen, strong organizational skills, and strong communication skills both orally and in writing
  • Technical proficiency in MS Office, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required along with knowledge of e-learning programs and HRIS systems preferred.
