Puppy Mill Staff Attorney, Animal Protection Litigation

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) seeks a litigation attorney with at least two years of litigation experience for a Staff Attorney position within the Animal Protection Litigation Section.  The position will focus primarily on issues related to puppy mills.  The main responsibility of this position is to serve as lead and co-counsel in a variety of state and federal court actions, primarily including actions to protect and improve the treatment of dogs in breeding facilities at the local, state and federal levels. Other duties include, but are not limited to: research, develop, and file precedent-setting legal actions aimed at curtailing the inhumane treatment of dogs in commercial breeding facilities; defend federal, state and local laws intended to curtail the inhumane treatment of  dogs in commercial breeding facilities; review, analyze, and comment on draft legislation – or draft legislation from scratch – aimed at curtailing the inhumane treatment of dogs in commercial breeding facilities; draft and review press releases, blogs, web articles, and other content related to the legal actions we are working on.  Staff Attorneys independently maintain and manage a docket of several cases and also work with some of the nation’s leading public interest and private lawyers to find new and creative ways to ensure that all animals receive the legal protections they deserve.   J.D. and at least 2 years of litigation experience highly desired.  Candidates must have an ability and willingness to travel.  Other important skills include: excellent written, verbal and analytical skills and skills in taking initiative, being innovative, and working with minimal supervision.  While some background in animal protection and/or environmental law is desired, we are primarily interested in hiring someone who is resourceful, innovative, productive, and who will be a strong advocate for animals.
