Vice President Finance and Controller, Accounting
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Vice President Finance and Controller for its Accounting Department. This position is responsible for directing the accounting functions for The HSUS and its 11 affiliate organizations, including its international entities. The primary accountabilities include ensuring the development/maintenance of all accounting systems/records, as well as a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the various entities’ reported financial information, and provide accurate and complete budget and financial planning and tracking; conducting and providing analysis and interpretation of accounting trends and issues; preparing financial and management reports for Executive leadership as well as the Board of Directors; preparing and/or reviewing compliance filings, including, but not limited to, those related to tax returns, state charitable solicitation registrations, 990s, foreign reporting requirements, investments, the Federal Election Commission, grants, and benefits; assuring the compliance with generally accepted accounting principles. Other duties include, but are not limited to: ensure that all accounting/financial transactions, including those related to the investment portfolio and cash position of the organization, are recorded appropriately and in a timely manner; monitor and ensure compliance with emerging relevant financial and tax reporting-focused legislation specific to the governance of non-profits; manage an overall Accounting Department staff of approximately thirty employees. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Business Administration or Accounting and certified as a Public Accountant highly desired; an advanced degree is a plus. Ten or more years of accounting experience, including five years of management experience – preferably in a similar leadership role preferred. Critical skills and abilities that are required include: knowledge of tax related reporting requirements, Microsoft Word and Excel, and computerized accounting software. Experience in /knowledge of international and 501(c)(4) organizations is highly desired. Thorough knowledge of (or an ability to learn) animal protection issues and be thoroughly mission-committed a plus.
