Lead Strategist, Email Marketing

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Lead Strategist, Email Marketing for the Digital department. The main responsibility of this position is to assist in identifying and executing advocacy and fundraising goals and maximize the effectiveness of the email campaign program.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Writing, producing, reviewing and sending emails to help meet advocacy and fundraising goals;
  • Assisting with executing the email marketing process (defining, creating, testing, and measuring) to identify and execute goals and improve the organization’s emails;
  • Training new and existing team members on processes and on the technology;
  • Acting as the technical lead on the team and helping to troubleshoot software issues;
  • Updating and maintaining the standard operating procedures to the team including production manuals and templates;
  • Liaise with other digital marketing staff on data collection, reporting, and analysis to measure the results of email campaigns.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. English, Communications, or related field, or equivalent work experience;
  • Minimum of 3 years demonstrated experience in digital marketing with at least 2 years direct experience with email marketing;
  • Experience with advocacy or non-profit organizational work is strongly desired;
  • Must have strong organizational and project management skills and be able to meet deadlines while managing multiple projects;
  • Basic HTML skills and web design required; familiarity with content management systems is highly desired (i.e. Blackbaud’s Luminate Online knowledge a strong plus);
  • Must have strong writing, editing, and problem-solving skills along with strong interpersonal skills;
  • Interest in animal protection issues is highly desired.
