Project Manager

The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Project Manager for the Communications department. This position is responsible for managing integrated marketing and communications campaigns and projects to achieve the organization’s fundraising and advocacy goals.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Managing high-priority, multi-team marketing projects focused on fundraising and/or advocacy;
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders throughout project lifecycles to develop goal agreement, schedule tasks and milestones, set and adhere to deadlines, resolve issues and problems, and develop cohesive reports on fundraising and/or advocacy results;
  • Serving as the primary point-of-contact for, and managing, professional relationships with outside vendors and agencies;
  • Collaborating with marketing, analytics, and donor care teams, identifying and managing donor and advocate segments to maximize fundraising and advocacy success, including donor retention;
  • Developing and executing multi-channel tests as part of the organization’s marketing campaigns, and based on supporter life cycles, personas, models, and other criteria designed to predict donor and advocate behavior;
  • Managing and growing the organization’s marketing automation program;
  • Providing strategic leadership and daily oversight of marketing and communications initiatives that bridge marketing and communications channels; organizing and running meetings to plan and execute campaigns; and developing marketing and communications strategies;
  • Ensuring that cross-channel marketing and fundraising campaigns meet established criteria to maximize the donor experience;
  • Developing and refining project-management processes to ensure they meet the strategic and day-to-day needs of organization’s fundraising and advocacy goals;
  • Working with data and analytics staff on the delivery of timely reports.


Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts, journalism, communications, marketing or related field, or equivalent experience required;
  • Project Management Professional certification required;
  • Minimum three or more years’ proven success in managing complex projects in marketing and/or communications disciplines, particularly in a digital environment, in either the for-profit or nonprofit sector;
  • Experience in at least one of the following areas preferred but not required: Conducting marketing or fundraising tests or programs, marketing automation, customer/donor journey management, and/or related areas;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing/implementing operational processes; facilitating and driving innovation; resolving problems; and, achieving results through cross-functional collaboration;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Ability to lead engaging, efficient and impactful meetings to include keeping attendees on task, allowing brainstorming when necessary, and running highly-effective, outcomes-oriented sessions;
  • The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel and in project management and collaboration software such as JIRA, Confluence, etc.;
  • Demonstrated propensity to be creative, collaborative, proactive, and self-motivated in the execution and completion of assigned accountabilities;
  • Organizational, project, and priority management skills for planning, executing and following up on issues, projects and daily responsibilities in order to meet established deadlines;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes;
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member;
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
