Public Information Officer

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Public Information Officer for its Public Relations department. The primary purpose of this position is  to deploy during disasters/rescues and promote the activities of the Animal Rescue Team for disaster response and rescue but also for disaster training opportunities.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Working with reporters and subject-matters experts during disaster and/or rescue deployments to act as a resource for journalists, and generating, arranging, and managing media interviews;
  • Identifying stories and newsworthy information related to HSUS Animal Rescue Team and pitching to reporters;
  • Drafting and routing press releases, press advisories, and other content about the organization’s rescue efforts, disaster response and preparedness and other related issues;
  • Facilitating and coordinating information flow and acting as the point of contact between the Animal Rescue Team and the communications division of the HSUS to create consistent, accurate, and compelling up-to-date messaging and stories;
  • Coordinating with the Animal Rescue Team, state and federal agencies, local officials, law enforcement and reporters about sensitive, complex, and/or quickly changing situations involving disasters and animal rescues in order to produce content to share with the public;
  • Using software to develop and maintain media lists and to conduct research to identify and cultivate reporters who will potentially cover HSUS’ rescue efforts; may travel to meet with those reporters;
  • Providing guidance to staff about how to increase earned media coverage and coach spokespeople and prepare them to deliver compelling, articulate responses during on and off camera interviews.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or journalism or equivalent experience;
  • Minimum of three or more years’ experience in communications, public relations, or journalism required;
  • One or more years of experience in disaster response training, crisis media, animal control or sheltering experience is preferred as is experience with incident Command Systems;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to multi-task while working in a fast-paced environment;
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills along with ability to build and foster relationships and uphold high standards of tact, diplomacy, and discretion;
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence and quality and timely outcomes;
  • Ability and willingness to travel (sometimes on short notice) and for extended periods as necessary.
