Puerto Rico Director, State Affairs
The Humane Society of the United States (The HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Puerto Rico Director for its State Affairs Division. The Puerto Rico Director will be responsible for carrying out The HSUS's agendas and priorities within the Commonwealth. The candidate will also assist Humane Society International (HSI) in overseeing the implementation of animal welfare projects within Puerto Rico.
Additional duties for this position include, but are not limited to: advancing Puerto Rico and federal legislative priorities; building coalitions with local groups and expanding a humane network within the island; developing localized strategies to implement HSUS/HSI campaigns; promoting emergency and disaster preparedness; representing HSUS/HSI in local media; maintaining relationships with local agencies and public officials; facilitating enforcement of animal protection laws; advancing development opportunities; and assisting with other projects as necessary. The candidate must be fluent in English and Spanish, and proficient in both writing and oral forms of communication.
A bachelor's degree or equivalent; two to three years of experience in animal protection issues and work; and legislative/government affairs exposure are preferred. Grassroots outreach, advocacy, and or campaign experience is desirable. In addition, strong organizational skills; strong communication skills; public speaking skills; the ability to work independently, take initiative and maintain good communication with others; and willingness to travel are highly desired.
