Senior Development Officer

The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Development Officer for the Events department. This position would advance the work of HSUS by generating revenue through key fundraising events in support of priority campaigns and program initiatives. Ensuring financial goals are reached by fostering strong volunteer leadership committees.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Collaborating in the overall vision and strategy of HSUS events. Equipped and prepared to articulate the vision, mission and goals of the HSUS to prospective event donors;
  • Cultivating event supporters by articulating the opportunities and impact of their financial investment and grow their continued support of the HSUS;
  • Working directly with volunteer and executive leadership, directors of philanthropy, program and campaign representatives to enlist support for event participant prospects and strategies;
  • Fundraising from all events including ticket & table sales in collaboration with fundraising, philanthropy and Directors of Philanthropy (DoPs) to reach annual budgeted goals;
  • Managing fundraising committees for each event as appropriate, coordinating with DoPs and others connected to committee members;
  • Engaging volunteer and executive leadership, program and campaign representatives in fundraising activities, strategically using natural partners in the cultivation and solicitation of significant financial and other support of the HSUS and its affiliates;
  • Coordinating sponsorship fundraising with Business Development & Corporate Relations Department;
  • Collaborating with department staff to determine event atmosphere that will support and enhance fundraising;
  • Maintaining donor data and contacts in HSUS donor database to ensure complete and accurate information on the donor/prospect and the relationship with HSUS;
  • Maintaining advanced knowledge and understanding of development techniques and fundraising best practices to interact capably with donors and their advisors on charitable gifts;
  • Supporting the mission and philosophy of HSUS and maintain a working knowledge of priority campaigns and programs, as well as relevant local and regional initiatives.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum 10 years of development experience with proven success in managing event-related fundraising with demonstrated experience cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major donors and prospects for gifts of five-figures or greater;
  • A high level of confidence, integrity, interpersonal skills, and a professional executive presence for effectively interacting with and influencing others, internal and external to the organization, as well as for facilitating meetings and conducting public speaking/presentations;
  • Knowledge of major gifts fundraising best practices and demonstrated success in developing strategies for major donor engagement and solicitation;
  • The ability to build/foster relationships by reinforcing trust and respect, and demonstrating high standards of tact, diplomacy and discretion;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills, as well as the ability to handle complex situations and demonstrate sound judgment and problem-solving;
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with demonstrated flexibility and the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
  • Business acumen, negotiation and mediation skills, and a demonstrated attention to detail and quality-focused outcomes;
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate information into a meaningful, understandable context and message, regardless of the format (e.g., documents, public speaking situations, presentations, etc.);
  • Technical proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e., WORD, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other data tracking tools; particularly fundraising database experience;
  • Willingness to travel and to work extended hours, as necessary;
  • Demonstrated experience engaging and building relationships with highly rated prospects and donors and ability to communicate the organization’s mission and programs.
