Shelter Outreach & Policy Engagement Associate

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Shelter Outreach and Policy Engagement Associate for our State Affairs department. The main responsibility of this position is to maintain and coordinate the Emergency Placement Program (EPP) through outreach to shelters and the rescue community nationwide and help build a strong shelter/rescue base to assist the organization.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with placement of animals from cruelty cases, natural disasters, emergency shelter requests and breeder surrenders into shelter partners in a safe and effective manner;
  • Assisting with building and maintaining a nationwide network of humane groups and shelters in the EPP system and with the guidance from State Affairs staff, build relationships and provide operational assistance to them as needed; will also conduct follow up with the shelter partners after placements in order to maintain relationships;
  • Tracking EPPs on social media and participating on behalf of the program and assist the Director with providing acknowledgement content to the social media team and the appropriate state directors;
  • Regularly informing members of the animal shelter and rescue community on state and federal policy priorities of the organization;
  • Assisting with the Humane State Program training week for shelter and rescue communities;
  • Expanding the EPP state level resource list and creating a network of breed and species–specific rescue groups that support the HSUS campaigns.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred;
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working within an animal shelter environment required;
  • Must have strong organizational, interpersonal and excellent communication skills;
  • Must be able and willing to travel locally and outside the area occasionally;
  • Must have proficiency with MS Office, particularly with Excel and PowerPoint required;
  • Must have strong writing, editing, and problem-solving skills along with strong interpersonal skills; social media experience is also required;
  • Prior knowledge of federal and state policy-making process required as is ability to juggle projects and meet deadlines.
