Specialist, Training and Development

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation's largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Specialist, Training and Development for the Human Capital and Development department. The main responsibility of this position is to create in-person and online learning modules, live web-based training sessions, and supporting materials following an instructional design process as well as delivering skill based training, coaching, and mentoring to learners.

This position will be responsible for:

  • Assisting in the design, development, and delivery of quality training programs for various delivery types (online, blended, in-person) across a wide-variety of topics, including management and leadership development, fundraising, and budgeting;
  • Developing training evaluations, documentation, and record keeping via a learning management system;
  • Developing and maintaining toolkits for managers and employees on topics such as supervision, performance management, and recruiting;
  • Coordinating and maintaining training projects to ensure successful development and implementation of training that are on budget and delivered on time;
  • Planning, scheduling, and facilitating project meetings and providing regular status updates to relevant stakeholders and subject matter experts;
  • Completing various project management and administrative tasks as needed;
  • Collaborating with volunteer coordinator and state affairs teams to advise on the development of training resources for volunteer staff;
  • Providing support for special projects as required by the Human Capital and Development team.


  • Bachelor’s degree in business, organizational development, instructional design, education, or other related field required; Master’s in similar field preferred;
  • Minimum two years’ experience in designing and developing learning solutions for a variety of formats and audiences;
  • Experience in creating e-learning training materials using authoring tools such as Captivate, Articulate, and Storyline;
  • Experience with SCORM and AICC;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Knowledge and application of adult learning theory;
  • Experience with online training development tools such as Adobe Captivate;
  • Strong digital/technical aptitude as well as advanced MS Office skills;
  • Strong consulting and relationship management skills and a track record of delivery and impact;
  • Ability to deliver in a climate of ambiguity and with technical limitations;
  • Must be a collaborator, team player, and willing to pitch in as needed.
