The Humane Society of the United States is now accepting nominations for its Pets of Valor Award.
The Pets of Valor Award celebrates the human-animal bond by honoring dogs and cats who have exhibited an extraordinary sense of courage or resolve by heroically helping a person in need.
In order to recognize the wonderful attributes of rescued pets, this year's award is open to all cats and dogs that have been rescued or adopted.
The HSUS will select five finalists from among the nominated pets. Finalists will be chosen based on the courage or resolve exhibited by the dog or cat to help a human in need and the significance and impact of his/her heroic action.
Finalists will be notified by The HSUS on or before May 24, 2013. Once the finalists have been selected, an online vote will determine which of the five finalists will be named Valor Pet of the Year. Voting will open on May 24, 2013 and close on May 31, 2013.
All finalists will receive a custom sterling silver tag designed by Bella Tocca Tags. The animal chosen to be Valor Pet of the Year will also receive a custom crystal figurine designed by Custom Glass Etching. The tag and/or figurine will be awarded to the dog or cat's primary caretaker.*
