Betsy Liley

Chief Development Officer

The Humane Society of the United States

Betsy Liley is chief development officer for The HSUS.

She directs all fundraising and donor relations for the organization, overseeing direct marketing, corporate foundations, planned giving and major gifts.

A longtime HSUS member, Liley brings 25 years worth of experience in communications, public policy and fundraising, and has held executive-level positions both in nonprofit and for-profit organizations. She joined The HSUS in May 2014 from Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, where she spearheaded the organization’s work with principal and major donors.

An Indiana native, Liley graduated from Purdue University and started her professional career as a print journalist for Gannett newspapers. She covered animal welfare issues in Vermont, including puppy mill rescues that helped spark the first felony animal cruelty laws in the Northeast.

She later spent time in public policy consulting, advertising and as a professor before entering fundraising, where she has worked in K-12 and higher education, public media and healthcare.

Liley, who has also volunteered on the boards of local humane societies and a land trust, lives in Maryland with her husband and five cats: Grisha, Emma, Sally, Notch and Giugi.
