Jonathan Lovvorn is Senior Vice President & Chief Counsel for Animal Protection Litigation. Prior to joining The Humane Society of the United States in 2005, he was an attorney with Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal in Washington, D.C.

A nationally recognized expert in the field of animal law, Mr. Lovvorn has litigated extensively on behalf of animals and manages the nation's largest animal protection litigation program, with dozens of attorneys prosecuting more than 40 cases in state and federal courts around the country.

Since its launch in 2005, The HSUS Animal Protection Litigation program has filed more than 130 legal actions, secured 110 favorable rulings for animals in state and federal courts around the country (a total win ratio of approximately 85%) and won millions of dollars in judgments, settlements and attorneys' fees from animal abusers. Groundbreaking victories won by The HSUS include court orders blocking the slaughter of American horses for human consumption, limiting long-distance transport of livestock, enforcing state laws banning canned hunting, restricting commercial trapping, ending the advertising of illegal cockfighting magazines on Amazon.com, strengthening regulations for the protection of dogs in puppy mills, stopping unlawful sport hunting programs in national wildlife refuges and protecting numerous other species including whales, sea lions, dolphins, lynx and wolves.

HSUS lawyers also secured the largest court judgment for animal abuse in U.S. history ($155,000,000) against the owners of the now infamous Hallmark slaughterhouse in Chino, California, where HSUS investigators documented egregious acts of cruelty in 2007.

In addition to his duties at The HSUS, Mr. Lovvorn also serves as an adjunct professor of Animal Law at Georgetown University Law Center, has authored several articles concerning animal law and wildlife policy and regularly lectures on animal law and litigation at Harvard University, Columbia University, New York University and many other major law schools.

Mr. Lovvorn's legal work has been featured in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, San Francisco Chronicle, the National Law Journal, CNN, NPR, and local television and radio outlets around the country.

Mr. Lovvorn is a 1995 graduate of University of California, Hastings College of the Law and holds an LL.M. in Environmental Law and Natural Resource Policy from Lewis and Clark Law School.
