Vice President, Publications and Brand Management
Nancy Lawson is The HSUS's Vice President of Publications and Brand Management. She joined The HSUS in 1998 as the Assistant Editor of Animal Sheltering magazine.
Now the Editor-in-Chief of All Animals, Lawson has expanded and revitalized the organization's flagship publication from a 24-page, custom-published quarterly to a 40-page, in-house bimonthly.
The most comprehensive magazine about animal protection, All Animals includes in-depth coverage of important issues of the day, features about HSUS staff in the field, entertaining pieces on pet care and behavior, advice on making humane choices, and interviews with advocates and visionaries.
During Lawson's first two years at the helm of All Animals, circulation increased by 25 percent, while the team reduced expenditures by almost 30 percent. Her creative group of editors, writers, designers, and photographers also produce annual reports, advertisements, newsletters, merchandising, conference promotions, outreach materials, and other collateral.
As managers of the HSUS brand, the team streamlines organizational messaging and designs to most effectively tell the compelling story of The HSUS and the animals we serve.
From 1999 to 2007, when Lawson served as the editor of Animal Sheltering, the premier publication for the animal care and services field, she doubled the page count, increased advertising revenue, and made the magazine self-sustaining. She and her staff have won numerous writing and design awards, also recently launching The HSUS's classroom newspaper into a new children's magazine, Kind News.
A former newspaper journalist, Lawson began her career at 15, contributing to her hometown paper. She received her bachelors degree from the University of Maryland College Park, where she was awarded the four-year Dean's Scholarship in journalism.
Her work has appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Tampa Tribune, The Chicago Tribune, and The Baltimore Evening Sun, among others. In 2000, she contributed chapters celebrating the human-animal bond to Rodale Press' "The Wonderful Thing About Pets."
