What does The HSUS do?
The HSUS is the nation's largest animal protection organization with more than ten million members and constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals, wildlife and habitat protection, animals in research, and farm animals. Our mission is to celebrate animals and confront cruelty. The HSUS protects all animals through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and field work. A non-profit organization, The HSUS celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2004, is based in Washington, D.C. and has regional representatives across the country.
How is The HSUS affiliated with my local humane society?
For more than a half century, The HSUS has stood as the nation's most important advocate for local humane societies. Membership
How do I become a member of The HSUS?
To become an HSUS member, send $10 or more to our Washington, D.C. office, or call 301-258-8276 for a packet of information about The HSUS and membership. Members who donate $25 or more annually will receive a one-year subscription to our award-winning magazine, All Animals.
How do I change my name or address with The HSUS?
To change your name or address, please send us your previous and current contact information. You may note this on your donation form or provide it via email at membership@hsus.org, or call us at 301-258-8276. Once your record is updated, it takes about eight weeks for the changes to take effect, as we process our mail two months in advance.
Can I modify the number of mailings that I receive?
Yes! To change the number of mailings you receive, please contact our Washington, D.C. office. We can decrease your correspondence to four mailings per year or one mailing per year. We will need your full name and address and the number of mailings you'd like to receive. Please note that it takes eight weeks for the mail to reflect the changes, as we process our mail two months in advance.
Why do I receive HSUS mailings addressed from Washington, DC and Phoenix, Arizona?
As the largest animal protection organization in the country, The HSUS receives a large volume of mail. To best coordinate the timely receipt and processing of all correspondence, The HSUS utilizes two mail houses, one in Washington, DC and one in Phoenix, Arizona. When responding to an HSUS mailing, we encourage you to use the provided postage-paid envelopes. This will ensure that your donations and letters are processed in a timely manner.
I sent in my HSUS membership renewal, but I received another "renewal" notice. Why?
The HSUS develops its mailings two months in advance. Often, a donation and the renewal notice cross in the mail. Be assured that for every donation of $10 or more, your membership is extended for one year from the date your gift is processed.
Does The HSUS exchange information with other organizations?
Yes. In addition to your contributions, donors assist The HSUS by allowing us to exchange their name with organizations whose missions support the work we do. Rest assured that no confidential information is exchanged. To remove your name from our exchange list, please contact us at membership@hsus.org or by calling 301-258-8276. You can also send your request to The HSUS, 2100 L St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20037, "Attn: Member Services."
What is my membership number?
Your membership number is listed on the reply card of each HSUS mailing. Either above or below your name and address, there should be a long series of letters and numbers. The second section of that series is your membership number. For example: If the series "2101 123456789 2 H43W29" is listed on your mailing, then your membership number is "123456789."

Does The HSUS offer gift memberships?
Yes. Click here to find out whether your company has a qualifying program, get the form from your employer, and then make your donation online or send us a check through the mail.
Then send your completed and signed form, along with your check or a copy of your online donation receipt, to HSUS, Dept: Matching Gifts, 2100 L St., NW, Washington, DC 20037. We'll take care of the rest.
Can I make a donation in honor of a person or special event?
Yes! Through the Hip Hip Humane! program, you can celebrate a special friend or special occasions such as birthdays, holidays, and weddings. An acknowledgment card will be sent to the gift membership recipient. Cards can even be sent on behalf of pets to humans and other furry friends. Now, dogs can send birthday cards, and cats can send holiday cards! There is no minimum donation for Hip Hip Humane! For additional information, call 1-866-MY-FRIEND, email us at hiphiphumane@hsus.org, or visit our web pages.
How do I make a donation in memory of a family member or pet?
The Kindred Spirits memorial program is a meaningful way to honor the memory of a person or pet, while helping to protect all animals. There is no minimum donation required for Kindred Spirits. The HSUS will send a sympathy card to the designated person or family acknowledging your donation. As a lasting tribute, the name of the deceased will be added to the Book of Kindred Spirits located in the HSUS's national operations center in Gaithersburg, Md. For additional information, call 1-866-MY-FRIEND or visit us online.
I'd like to give regularly. Does The HSUS have a monthly pledge program?
The HSUS has two monthly pledge programs for members. Through The HSUS President's Club, members can sign up for automatic deductions from their credit card or checking account. If you would prefer to send in your donation, The HSUS Partner's Circle provides members with monthly reminder statements. For more information about our monthly pledge programs, call us at 202-452-1100, or e-mail us at membership@hsus.org.
I already participate in the monthly pledge program. How do I change my account information for the automatic deductions?
To change or update the account information for your automatic deductions, call 202-452-1100, or send an email to membership@hsus.org. Likewise, if you would like to increase or decrease the amount of your pledge, please contact us at the above phone number or email address.
I participate in the Partner's Circle program, but I also make additional contributions to The HSUS. Will the monthly statement show all my gifts?
Your monthly statement will only indicate whether or not the previous month's Partner's Circle donation was made. If you would like to pay for multiple months, please indicate this on your statement, and we will credit your record accordingly. Otherwise, your statement will only be credited for the designated month. If you respond to a different HSUS mailing, the donation will be credited to your general membership record, and not to your Partner's Circle statement. For a receipt showing all donations to The HSUS, please contact us at 301-258-8276, or send an email to membership@hsus.org. Be sure to include your full name and address.
If I donate monthly through an automatic debit, can I still receive HSUS mailings?
Yes. You will continue to receive regular HSUS correspondence. Rest assured that as a member of any HSUS monthly giving program, your membership will always be considered current. If, however, you would like to receive fewer mailings, please contact us by phone, email or conventional mail (202-452-1100; membership@hsus.org; HSUS, 2100 L St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20037).
Can I donate through my workplace?
Yes. If your company offers workplace giving, such as America's Charities or United Way, you should contact your Human Resources representative for enrollment materials. Please note that your company may or may not supply The HSUS with all the information we require to credit you for your gift. You should confirm with your company that the donations, as well as your name and address, are being submitted as requested.
Does The HSUS accept matching gifts from my employer?
Yes. First check with your employer regarding the rules of the program and any possible restrictions. Then please forward your employer's matching gift form, along with your donation, to The HSUS at 2100 L St., NW, Washington, D.C., 20037, Attn: Matching Gifts Program.
Do you participate in the Combined Federal Campaign, and, if so, what is your number?
The HSUS does participate in the Combined Federal Campaign. Our number is 11894. See your Human Resources Department to enroll in this program.
T-shirts, Notecards and Address Labels
I received the T-shirt offer in the mail and sent in a donation. When will I receive my shirts?
Once your donation is processed and credited to your membership record, it takes approximately eight weeks for your T-shirts to arrive. Occasionally, we may experience a backlog of the most popular designs. We thank you for your patience, and encourage you to contact us if you have not received your shirts after eight weeks.
Can I order additional T-shirts from The HSUS' T-shirt campaign? What if I donate extra money?

What size are The HSUS' T-shirts?
The T-shirts offered in our mailings are only available in adult size large. We apologize for any inconvenience.

My friend would like to join The HSUS through your T-shirt campaign. Can you send an extra form?
Sorry, the offer is available only to those who received the original HSUS mailing.
