The HSUS Shelter Services Program
Helping shelters help communities
Helping Those Who Care for Animals
Does your shelter or rescue need assistance in improving its adoption programs, animal care protocols, human resources management, or community relationships? Want to ensure that your organization is achieving the highest standards of animal care and handling, sanitation, or animal control services in order to save more lives? We can help!
Whether your organization is large or small, government or nonprofit, rural or urban, shelter-based or foster-based, The Humane Society of the United States (The HSUS) understands the variety and complexity of the problems you face. Animal care agencies often struggle to find the necessary balance between community expectations and available resources, and finding the time to stay current on new research and trends can be a challenge. The HSUS's Shelter Services program can help you acquire and develop the expertise you need to ensure your organization's long-term stability and success.
How We Can Help
Once you've told us a little about your organization and what concerns you have by completing the request for assistance, a Shelter Services representative will contact you and direct you to the information most relevant to your areas of need. For example, if you’d like to develop a better Board of Directors, we can offer sample documents and resources to help make it the best it can be.
» Email us or call 202-452-1100 for information.
We can also provide you with more in-depth, one-on-one assistance through webinars, conference calls, or remote analysis of operations. If disease control is a challenge at your facility, for example, we can review your existing cleaning procedures (we may ask you to send us a video of your staff actually performing the work) and give your staff a customized training session on sanitation and disease outbreak prevention.
Finally, for those more complicated situations, The HSUS can arrange to have one of our sheltering experts visit your facility to provide targeted advice and guidance to management, staff, and/or volunteers on your specific issue. Alternatively, we can help identify an independent expert who can help you develop programs in a specialty area, such as establishing a comprehensive behavioral assessment program.
What Does It Cost?
Any advice and guidance that HSUS staff provides remotely, including resources and data, individualized trainings, and analysis of operations, is FREE to you!
