It's National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week!

Show some love to local animal shelters and rescue groups Nov. 4–10, 2012

National Animal Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week is the perfect time to help homeless pets waiting for new homes in shelters and with rescue groups across the country by celebrating the places that take care of them. Each day—starting Sunday, November 4—and all week long, show your local animal shelters and rescues some love! We've set up an Event in Facebook so you can share the fun.

All week long: Share your love
 

Tell the world how you feel about your local shelter or rescue by using our Facebook share graphics.

Just click on your favorite to add the image to your Facebook page. (If you think they're both too cute to choose a favorite, just swap them out every day.)

Sunday

First things first—Locate your local shelter and rescue groups.

Monday

Learn before you leap—Looking for more affection and devotion in your life? Before you adopt, go to the Shelter Pet Project to learn what to expect when adopting a pet.

•   Check in with local shelters and rescues.

Tuesday

Say "thanks!"—Take a minute to thank the people who work at your local shelter or rescue groups. If you've adopted a pet from them, send an updated picture through snail mail, email, or by posting on Facebook to let them know how well your pet is doing!

Wednesday

Become a fan—"Like" the Shelter Pet Project on Facebook.

Mid-Week: Go MUTTS for shelters and rescues!
 

Thursday

Make wishes come true—Shelters and rescue groups are always in need of towels, toys, and other supplies. Check their websites for wish lists or give them a call to see what they need.

Friday

Volunteer—Even if you can’t adopt a new pet just now, you can help make life better for homeless animals by volunteering with your local shelter or rescue organization. Do you have experience as a carpenter or electrician, or are you a marketing or dog-walking whiz? All of these skills are needed!

Saturday

Help at your own home—Make the jobs of shelters and rescues easier: Outfit your cats and dogs with collars and proper ID (a microchip and ID tags) at all times, and have all of your pets spayed and neutered. Keep your cats indoors, where you can ensure they’re safe, and keep dogs on leashes when off your property.
