The HSUS, Humane Society Legislative Fund and Born Free USA commend Sens. Barbara Boxer, David Vitter, and Richard Blumenthal for introducing the Captive Primate Safety Act, to prohibit interstate commerce of monkeys, apes and other nonhuman primates in the exotic pet trade.

The HSUS has filed legal petitions with the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services Tuesday requesting investigations and legal actions to halt potential government contract fraud at the New Iberia Research Center, a primate laboratory located in New Iberia, La. and part of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Meet Kitty: February's Chimpanzee of the Month
Kitty suffered terribly for 25 years at the Coulston Foundation, a now-defunct research laboratory in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where she was used as a "breeder." During that time she gave birth to as many as 14 baby chimpanzees, ten of whom were taken away from her.
