Citizens Call on Rhode Island Lawmakers to Pass Farm Animal Welfare Legislation
Citizens from across Rhode Island spent the morning meeting with lawmakers in Providence to urge them to pass S.2191/H.7180, twin bills that would prohibit the inhumane factory farming practice of virtually immobilizing breeding pigs and veal calves in tiny crates barely larger than their bodies for most of their lives.

Following Legal Complaint, Kentucky Department of Agriculture Opens Livestock Care Standards for Public Review
Responding to a legal complaint filed by The HSUS, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and its Livestock Care Standards Commission have partially reversed course to allow the public a voice in the creation of the state’s animal care policies.

Today, Supreme Court justices considered a case centering on a challenge by a slaughterhouse trade association to provisions of California’s anti-cruelty law relating to abuse of downer livestock. If the court strikes down this law, we may not only see California’s anti-cruelty law gutted, but we may also see anti-horse slaughter laws shot down.

Supreme Court To Decide Whether Meatpackers Can Use Sick, Injured Animals in the Food Supply
The HSUS asked the Supreme Court to reject a meat industry lawsuit seeking to overturn a California law that prohibits slaughterhouses, stockyards, auctions or dealers from buying, selling or receiving animals too disabled to walk and prohibits slaughterhouses from killing or processing these “downed” animals.
