The Humane Society of the United States released more details of an undercover investigation that revealed unacceptable and callous animal cruelty at a Vermont slaughter plant, including footage of a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector apparently failing to enforce federal humane treatment laws, and the plant co-owner participating in the abuse with gusto.

The HSUS released the results of an undercover investigation documenting shocking animal abuse at a Vermont slaughter plant. The USDA and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture immediately suspended operations at the plant, pending a continuing investigation.

Mich. Gov. Granholm Signs Historic Farm Animal Welfare Measure
The Michigan Humane Society, The HSUS and Farm Sanctuary applaud a compromise bill to improve the treatment of farm animals in Michigan. Gov. Granholm signed the landmark bill to require that certain farm animals have enough room to stand up, lie down, turn around and extend their limbs, rather than being confined in tiny cages.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm is expected to sign legislation requiring that egg-laying hens, breeding pigs and veal calves have enough space to engage in basic movement. The law is the result of good-faith negotiations between humane groups, environmental groups and the state's agricultural industry.
