The Michigan Senate passed legislation Thursday to block voters from having a say in whether non-game animals, such as wolves and sandhill cranes and others, are designated as game species for hunting and trapping.

A new TV ad campaign airing throughout Michigan is urging state lawmakers to oppose legislation that would take away the rights of Michigan voters to have a say on any new hunting and trapping seasons of protected wildlife species, including mourning doves and wolves.

Anti-Wolf Bill Would Also Enable Repeal of Voter-Approved Ban on the Target Shooting of Mourning Doves
A bill introduced to derail a citizen referendum to prevent the state’s declining wolf population from being subjected to trophy hunting and commercial trapping would also enable a small, hunter-dominated commission to overturn the state’s 2006 ban on the target shooting of mourning doves.

Statement on Iowa Legislature Passing Bill to Allow Mourning Dove Hunt
The HSUS expresses its disappointment that the Iowa Senate and House of Representatives have voted to allow the target shooting of mourning doves for the first time since 1918. This bill repeals nearly a century of dove protection policy in Iowa, yet lawmakers rushed it through the process without hardly a word of debate or a serious vetting of the issues.

A statewide survey conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Inc. has revealed that a 54 percent of Iowa voters oppose opening a dove hunting season while only 25 percent support.
