The majestic polar bear can swim 6 miles an hour for 60 miles—without rest. In the case of an adult male, that means propelling up to 1,000 pounds through icy waters (hard to imagine he weighed 1 ½ pounds as a newborn). But the species can’t out-swim threats from humans, and needs a lifeline to last through this century.
