Hound Hunting of Bears - Sample letter to the Editor #3 (Remember to edit this letter and make it your own. Letters are more likely to be printed if they are not identical to others.) [Date] To the Editor, The atrocious practice of hound hunting, currently permitted in [Your State], should be banned immediately. Hound hunters use packs of dogs to perform the majority of the work involved in hunting. Instead of a fair pursuit between hunter and hunted, dogs with radio collars are sent forth to overexert a bear or other animal. Meanwhile, the hunter follows the radio signal at a relaxed pace. When unable to proceed further or when the bear has attempted to escape into a tree, the hunter can then shoot her at close range. When training the dogs, a hunter may maim animals in order to allow the dogs to attack and develop a taste for the hunt. Hound hunting is nothing more than a form of animal cruelty, for the bear as well as the dogs. Not only are they often kept in pens or chained out of doors, denied exercise or proper shelter, but they may be mauled and killed by aggressive bears who choose to fight back. They may also learn to show aggression towards people, children, or other animals. Hound hunting violates any sense of fair chase and is too cruel to be allowed to continue.
