Spring Bear Hunting - Sample Letter to the Editor #2 (Remember to edit this letter and make it your own. Letters are more likely to be printed if they are not identical to others.) [Date] To the Editor, It is unfortunate that [Your State] allows the unsporting practice of hunting bears in the spring. The vast majority of states that allow bear hunting prohibit this practice, likely because it is unnecessary and because of the number of cubs who are orphaned as a result of the hunt. It is well-documented that cubs who are orphaned in the spring die, usually succumbing to predators or starvation. Cubs can be as young as a month old during the spring bear hunting season in some states. While it is illegal to kill a sow accompanied by cubs, the cubs are not always at their mother’s side and it is difficult to tell if a sow is lactating. Though black bear cubs usually remain with their mothers for more than a year, during their infancy a mother bear will often leave her cubs alone while she forages for food, often for several hours and roaming more than a mile away. It is wrong to orphan cubs, especially for the sake of trophy bear head or a bearskin rug. Sincerely, [Name] [Title] [Local group]
