Spring Bear Hunting - Sample Letter to the Editor #4 (Remember to edit this letter and make it your own. Letters are more likely to be printed if they are not identical to others.) I was shocked to learn that [Your State] allows the hunting of bears in the spring. Because cubs remain with their mothers throughout their first full year, hunting bears at any time can result in cubs being orphaned, but spring bear hunting is particularly cruel because when a mother bear is killed in the spring her cubs can be as young as a month old. When cubs are young the mother will often leave them in a tree for hours while she forages far away, so the hunter taking aim at a sow has no way of knowing she may have several cubs waiting for her to return. At such a young age, bear cubs are completely dependent on their mothers for survival. In her absence they are left to slowly starve to death or to be killed by predators. It is time for [Your State] to put an end to this unsporting practice and cancel the annual spring bear hunt. Doing so would in no way effect the state’s ability to conduct a hunt in the fall.
