Spring Bear Hunting - Sample Letter to the Editor #5 (Remember to edit this letter and make it your own. Letters are more likely to be printed if they are not identical to others.) Sadly, bear cubs are inevitably being orphaned each year during [Your State]’s spring bear hunt. Cubs are typically only a matter of a couple months of age when the hunt begins, are still nursing and cannot fend for themselves if their mothers are killed. A mother bear will often leave her cubs hidden safely in a tree while she forages for food, often far away. The hunter who shoots her for a trophy or a bearskin rug has no way of knowing that she has cubs. Many times hunters cannot even be sure what the sex of the bear is that they’re shooting at. When the mother bear doesn’t return, her cubs, who are still dependent on her milk and would have remained with her for an entire year, will slowly starve to death within a couple weeks or will be killed by a predator. It’s time to end cruel spring bear hunts. [Date] To the Editor, Sincerely, [Name] [Title] [Local group]
