Footnote
The facilities listed on this page are those subject to the provisions of the Animal Welfare Act, a federal law that pertains to the care, handling, and use of animals in research.

The Animal Welfare Act requires facilities that conduct biomedical research and testing on animals to register with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and submit a report to the agency annually. Registered facilities are inspected by the USDA at least once annually, with the exception of federal facilities, which are not inspected by the USDA.

The Animal Welfare Act applies only to research facilities that use certain animal species. This includes all mammals and birds except laboratory-bred mice, rats, and birds. Also excluded are reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. Excluded animals account for the vast majority of animals used in US-based research.

The Animal Welfare Act does not apply to facilities that conduct research solely on non-covered animals. Consequently, these facilities are not required to submit annual reports to the USDA nor are they inspected by the USDA. Only facilities that conduct research on covered mammals and birds are regulated by the Act, are required to submit annual reports, and are subject to inspection. These are the facilities listed on this page.
