Luis Aponte, a student in the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design program at Miami International University of Art & Design, put his own fur-free spin on a Derek Lam garment to win the grand prize in the ninth annual Cool vs. Cruel Fashion Design Competition. Aponte earned a cash prize of $1,000, and was also awarded an expense-paid, week-long internship in New York City with celebrated fur-free designer and competition judge Victoria Bartlett.

The Humane Society of the United States and Donna Salyers’ Fabulous-Furs have launched a faux-fur design competition at Parsons The New School for Design. Since 2009, The HSUS has been presenting at the prestigious design school to educate students about the problems associated with animal fur.

World-renowned fashion designer Victoria Bartlett is using her spring/summer 2014 “VPL” show to help protect animals from the fur trade. The HSUS is sponsoring the show on Friday, Sept. 6 as part of New York Fashion Week. Bartlett will distribute literature, buttons and other materials promoting fur-free fashion.
