Please read these before entering the contest.

Deadline extended!

1. Disclosure; Contest Period

No donation, purchase, or obligation of any kind is necessary to win. A donation or purchase will not increase your chances of winning. You have not yet won. The MEATLESS MONDAY STUDENT ESSAY CONTEST (the “Contest”) begins at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (“EST”) on March 14, 2013 and ends at 11:59 p.m. EST on May 6, 2013 (“Contest Period”).

2. Eligibility

The Contest is open only to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and the District of Columbia who are thirteen (13) years of age or older at the time of entry and who are enrolled in high school (grades 9-12), a two-year or four-year college, or a post-secondary trade or vocational school at the time of entry.  If you are under eighteen (18) years of age, you may only enter the Contest with the permission of your parent or legal guardian.  The parent or legal guardian of an entrant under the legal age of majority in his/her jurisdiction of residence agrees to ensure that the entrant will comply with these official contest rules (the “Official Rules”) and warrants that the entrant is capable of agreeing to these Official Rules and giving the consent contained herein.  Employees and independent contractors of The Humane Society of the United States (“The HSUS”), Rory Friedman, Elizabeth Castoria, Patrick McDonnell, their affiliates, and any other individual or entity involved in the development, promotion, or execution of the Contest, and the immediate family members and/or household members of each are not eligible.  The Contest is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and is void where prohibited.

3. How to Enter

The Contest is open to two (2) categories of entrants, and entrants in the Contest will only compete against other entrants in their category:
• “High School Category”: Individual entrants who are enrolled in high school (grades 9-12) at the time of entry.
• “University/Post-Secondary Category”: Individual entrants who are enrolled in a two-year or four-year college or a post-secondary trade or vocational school at the time of entry.
To enter the Contest, write a five hundred (500) to eight hundred (800) word persuasive essay detailing the ways Meatless Monday benefits people, animals, and the environment (the “Essay Topic”). To submit your entry, send your essay, along with your name, phone number (including area code), age, school’s name, and major (if applicable) (collectively, your “Entrant Information”) by email to FarmAnimals@humanesociety.org.*  All entries shall become the property of The HSUS when received and shall not be returned.

By entering the Contest, you (or, if you are an eligible minor, your parent or legal guardian) represent and warrant that:
(a) your entry complies with the Entry Requirements, as defined in § 4 of these Official Rules;
(b) your entry is original, is entirely created by you, and does not plagiarize another’s work; and
(c) your entry does not invade the right of privacy of any individual; does not infringe any trademark, trade name, trade secret, intellectual property right, or other common law or statutory right; does not contain any material that might be deemed offensive or obscene, or that otherwise violates any law or regulation or the personal or proprietary rights of any person or entity.

4. Entry Requirements

Each entry must comply with the following requirements (collectively, the “Entry Requirements”):
• Only emailed entries will be accepted.  Entries received by mail, facsimile, or otherwise will not be accepted for entry into the Contest.
• Entries must be received during the Contest Period. Entries received by The HSUS before the Contest Period begins or after it ends will not be accepted.
• Entries must be written in English and must be legible.
• Entries must be complete and include all Entrant Information, as defined in § 3 above.
• Entries must address the Essay Topic, as defined in § 3 above.
If your entry fails to comply with the above Entry Requirements, as determined by The HSUS in its sole discretion, The HSUS may deem your entry ineligible.  Without limitation, The HSUS also reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to deem any entry ineligible if it reflects negatively upon The HSUS, the Contest, or any other person or entity; is the subject of a notification of potential infringement or violation of law; or for any other reason at the sole discretion of The HSUS.

5. How the Winner Will Be Determined

At the conclusion of the Contest Period, a panel of three (3) judges will select two (2) winners from the High School Category and two (2) winners from the University/Post-Secondary Category (each a “Winner” and collectively, the “Winners”) from among the eligible entries in each category, respectively.  Winners will be selected based on the quality of the entry.  All decisions of the judging panel are final.

6. Prizes

Each Winner will receive:
• One (1) print of a MUTTS comic strip, signed by creator Patrick McDonnell;
• One (1) signed copy of Wayne Pacelle’s book The Bond;
• One (1) box of organic chocolates; and
• One (1) HSUS logo t-shirt.
The approximate retail value (“ARV”) of the prize for each Winner is ninety-nine dollars ($99 USD). The ARV of all prizes offered in connection with the Contest is three hundred ninety-six dollars ($396 USD).

7. Winner Notification/Prize Claims

The Winners will be selected by May 8, 2013 and will be notified via email or phone by May 10, 2013.  In the event that a Winner is unable to accept a prize, an alternate Winner will be selected.  The Winner will be required to complete and sign an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability Release and, where legal, a Publicity Release, all of which must be returned within thirty (30) days of attempted prize notification or the prize will be forfeited and awarded to an alternate Winner.  If the prize is won by an eligible person who is not of legal age in his/her jurisdiction of residence, the prize shall be awarded in the name of the Winner’s parent or legal guardian, who must sign and return all required documentation prior to receiving the prize.  In the event of noncompliance with these Official Rules, or if a prize or prize notification is unclaimed or returned as undeliverable, the prize will be forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate Winner.

8. Prize Restrictions

Prizes are not transferable.  No substitution of prizes is permitted except at the sole discretion of The HSUS.  Any federal, state, or local taxes on prizes and any expenses related to the acceptance and/or use of the prizes not specified herein as being awarded are the responsibility of the Winners.

9. Additional Terms

By entering the Contest, you agree (or, if you are an eligible minor, your parent or legal guardian agrees) to these Official Rules and to the decisions of The HSUS, which are final and binding in all matters related to the Contest.

By accepting a prize, each Winner (or, in the case of an eligible minor, his/her parent or legal guardian):
(a) acknowledges compliance with these Official Rules;
(b) consents to The HSUS’s use of the Winner’s name, likeness, voice, and/or biographical information for promotional and other purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law; and
(c) agrees to release The HSUS, Rory Friedman, Elizabeth Castoria, Patrick McDonnell, and their affiliates, and its officers, directors, employees, independent contractors, representatives, and agents (“Releasees”) from and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the Contest or the receipt, redemption, or use of any prize, including any injuries or damages of any kind sustained in connection with the use, acceptance, possession, or awarding of any prize.

10. Limitation of Liability

Releasees are not responsible for printing, typographical, human or other errors of any kind in any Contest-related materials or for stolen, lost, late, misdirected, damaged, incomplete, or illegible entries.  If, for any reason, the Contest is not capable of running as planned, or infection by computer viruses, bugs, or tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, actions of entrants, technical failures, or any other causes corrupt or infect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Contest, The HSUS reserves the right at its sole discretion to disqualify any entry or entrant and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest and at its sole discretion award a prize from among all eligible non-suspect entries validly received prior to the action requiring such modification.  By entering, all contestants agree that the Contest is governed by laws of the District of Columbia for the resolution of all claims and disputes (excluding any claims against or disputes involving parties other than The HSUS relating to any prize awarded in the Contest).
