Enticing Spice Squares
The cooking aroma alone will lure people to your kitchen

Michelle Riley/HSUS
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 cup water
1-1/2 cups sultana raisins
1/3 cup oil
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon warm water
2 cups flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, coarsely broken
Preheat oven to 350 F (175 C).
In a saucepan, boil together for 3 minutes the brown sugar, cup of water, raisins, oil, cinnamon, cloves, salt, and nutmeg. Cool the mixture.
Dissolve the soda in the tablespoon of warm water and add to the boiled mixture.
Mix together the flour and baking powder and beat into the mixture. Fold in the nuts.
Spread evenly in an oiled 8x12-inch baking pan and bake 25 minutes or until a knife or cake tester comes out dry.
When cool, cut into squares (three cuts the short way, then five cuts the long way).
