The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries
Helping sanctuaries help animals
The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) was formed in 2007 by nationally and globally recognized leaders in the animal protection field. The GFAS does not intend to run animal sanctuaries, but rather to help sanctuaries help animals.
Recently the GFAS has begun the accreditation process with several equine rescue facilities or sanctuaries. They aim to provide a national standard of horse care and management for equine rescues and serve as a valuable resource for horse owners and others who are interested in becoming involved with a horse rescue, whether through donating time or funds, adopting or relinquishing a horse, or looking for guidance in starting a new facility.
The HSUS and The Homes for Horses Coalition have partnered with the GFAS to develop their equine sanctuary accreditation program and promote its standards of excellence in the equine rescue community. The program will help steer resources and funding to facilities and organizations operating at the highest standard.
Until the GFAS program is fully operational, The HSUS will continue to maintain a national database of horse rescues to assist interested parties in locating horse rescues in their community.
