The Prince George’s County Commission for Animal Control denied a request from a pet store owner attempting to gain custody of an allegedly neglected Rottweiler puppy seized after an undercover investigation. In November, representatives from The Humane Society of the United States and Baltimore-based ReLove Animals, Inc. testified to prevent the return of the sick puppy to the owner of Genesis Pets, located in Capitol Heights, Md.

The Gates County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office called in The HSUS, SPCA of Wake County, and SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina to rescue approximately 40 dogs and 75 other animals from a suspected puppy mill.

Jillian Michaels, Daytime Emmy-nominated television personality and one of the nation’s leading health and wellness experts, has joined The Humane Society of the United States for a billboard campaign to encourage consumers to avoid supporting puppy mills this holiday season, and to help rescue dogs by adopting from shelters or rescue groups. The ad, which includes both billboard and online versions, stars Jillian’s rescued dogs, Harley, Richard and Seven, and was photographed by renowned celebrity photographer, Don Flood.

Dogs in the sweltering Texas heat in open-air flea markets, employees refusing to tell consumers information on the source of the dogs, and unhealthy and underage puppies pouring in from out-of-state puppy mills and brokers were among the findings of a multi-faceted undercover investigation. Conducted by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the investigation touched 34 pet stores and flea markets across Texas and hundreds of shipping records as part of the examination of how dogs are treated by the pet industry in the state.

The Pender County, N.C., Sheriff's Department called in The HSUS, SPCA of Wake County, Guilford County Animal Shelter, and North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association to rescue 104 dogs from a squalid puppy mill.

For the third time, consumers who say they purchased sick and dying puppies from notorious dog sellers James and Gilda Anderson are asking the Broward County Circuit Court to hold the Andersons accountable. In papers filed yesterday, the consumers argue that the Andersons have continued to violate a court order and the terms of a settlement agreement the parties entered into more than three years ago, by selling puppies from substandard breeding facilities and violating disclosure requirements as to where the puppies they sell come from. As a result, the motion argues, consumers are still receiving sick puppies.

Major puppy mill victory: The USDA is cracking down on unlicensed puppy mills. All large-scale breeders that sell dogs and other warm-blooded pets using the Internet, phone, or mail will be licensed and regularly inspected for basic humane care standards.

A group of consumers filed a lawsuit in LaSalle County Circuit Court against the Chicago pet store chain Furry Babies, Inc., claiming that the store sold sick puppies from puppy mills to unsuspecting consumers in violation of state consumer protection laws.
