Lewis & Clark Humane Society, The Humane Society of the United States and Jefferson County attorney Matthew Johnson issued the following statements in response to the sentence of Mike Chilinski, who was convicted of animal cruelty due to inhumane conditions at his puppy mill.

Los Angeles-Area Pet Stores Take The HSUS’s ‘Puppy Friendly’ Pledge
Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and local advocates of The Humane Society of the United States, 80 Los Angeles-area pet stores have signed The HSUS’s Puppy Friendly Pet Stores pledge — committing not to sell puppies, and instead support local animal adoption programs and provide literature that helps customers learn how to get a puppy from a responsible source.

Pet industry associations and animal welfare organizations have joined forces in an industry-‐wide effort to improve conditions for dogs and puppies kept by substandard commercial breeders and sold to consumers. The goal of the group is to create lasting change in the commercial breeding industry to ensure proper and humane care and safety of all dogs and puppies.

The Humane Society of the United States applauds Gov. John Kasich and members of the Ohio legislature for passing Amended Substitute Senate Bill 130 into law. The law imposes new measures to curb many of the worst abuses of high volume dog breeders that are prevalent in the state.
