California’s Dangerous Anti-Whistleblower Bill Pulled by Author
The California anti-whistleblower “ag-gag” legislation, Assembly Bill 343 backed by the California Cattlemen’s Association, was pulled by the bill’s author, Assemblymember Jim Patterson, R-Fresno, after facing widespread opposition by a broad range of organizations including those that work to protect food safety, the environment, animals, the first amendment and labor unions.

Five Workers at Wyoming Premium Farms Convicted of Animal Cruelty following Undercover Investigation
Five employees from Wheatland, Wyo.-based Wyoming Premium Farms— Patrick Ruckavina, Richard Pritekel, Edward Pritekel, Kali Oseland and David Bienz—have each been convicted on multiple counts of cruelty to animals after a Humane Society of the United States undercover investigation documented acts of animal abuse.

Court Allows Lawsuit Over Perdue’s “Humane” Claims to Proceed
A federal court in New Jersey has cleared the way for a class action lawsuit against the nation's third-largest poultry producer, Perdue Farms, Inc., over the company's alleged false advertising of factory farmed chicken products as “humane.”

USDA Moves to Ban Slaughter of Downer Veal Calves Too Sick or Injured to Walk
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has granted The Humane Society of the United States’ 2009 legal petition requesting that the agency halt the inhumane practice of slaughtering downer veal calves too sick, weak or tired to even stand up.

Animal welfare groups strongly criticized a decision by the Obama administration to process an application for inspecting horse slaughter at a New Mexico facility on the grounds that killing horses for human consumption is inhumane and creates a serious health risk to consumers.

Washington Bill Aims to End Painful and Unnecessary Practice of Dairy Cow Tail-Docking
The Humane Society of the United States is urging Washington legislators to support HB 1787 to help end the painful and unnecessary practice of tail-docking dairy cows in Washington, a top 10 dairy-producing state. Rep. Derek Standord, D-1, introduced the legislation.

The HSUS’ Legal Complaints Force Seaboard Foods to Stop False Animal Care Claim
Following The Humane Society of the United States’ legal complaints to the Federal Trade Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission over false and misleading animal welfare statements made by Seaboard Foods, the nation’s third-largest pork producer, Seaboard has been forced to alter its online advertising around the hot-button topic of animal welfare throughout its operations.

Animal Protection Groups Urge Indiana Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee to Oppose Harmful Anti-Whistleblower Bill
The Humane Society of the United States, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Farm Sanctuary, Mercy For Animals, Compassion Over Killing, the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Animal Welfare Institute, Compassion in World Farming and the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association are urging members of the Indiana Senate Corrections and Criminal Law Committee to oppose SB373, a bill that seeks to prevent whistleblowers from exposing the mistreatment of animals and other misconduct on industrial farms.
