    New York State Lawmakers Asked to Protect Animals at Humane Lobby Day 2011 in Albany

    New York animal advocates are meeting with state lawmakers in Albany today for Humane Lobby Day 2011, and urging support of bills to upgrade laws against animal fighting, canned hunting, cutting cows' tails off and other factory farming abuses. The HSUS organized Lobby Day with the sponsorship of Farm Sanctuary, Humane Society of New York and New York State Humane Association.

    Animal Advocates Lobby Oklahoma Lawmakers for Animal Welfare Legislation

    Citizens from across Oklahoma participating in The HSUS' Humane Lobby Day 2011 met with lawmakers Monday at the Capitol to urge them to oppose SB773 which would significantly weaken the Commercial Pet Breeders Act which was passed in 2010 to crack down on puppy mills in Oklahoma. Citizen lobbyists will also ask legislators to strengthen penalties for spectators at dogfights.

    The HSUS Praises Utica, N.Y. Mayor for Support on Closing Loopholes in State Animal Fighting Law

    The HSUS commends Utica, N.Y., Mayor David Roefaro for his support of Assembly Bill A.4407 and its Senate companion S.3237 which would close loopholes in the state’s animal fighting laws – some of the weakest in the nation.

    Animal Advocates Lobby Indiana Lawmakers for Animal Welfare Legislation

    Animal advocates from across Indiana rallied at the state capitol in Indianapolis to urge their legislators to enact stronger animal protection laws as part of The HSUS' Humane Lobby Day 2011. Citizen advocates urged legislators to strengthen laws to crack down on animal fighting and prohibit coyote and fox penning, and to oppose captive trophy hunts.

    The HSUS Assists Calhoun County Law Enforcement in Dogfighting Investigation

    The HSUS worked closely with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation and arrest of an alleged dogfighter. This is the first dogfighting arrest in West Virginia since the dogfighting became a felony in 2003.
