House Appropriations Committee Votes to Strip Funds for Inspections of U.S. Horse Slaughter Plants
By a voice vote, the U.S. House Appropriations Committee today approved an amendment offered by Rep. Jim Moran, D-Va., to block spending by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to inspect U.S. horse slaughter plants in Fiscal Year 2013.

The Humane Society of the United States Offers Reward in Northwest Indiana Racehorse's Death
The HSUS is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for killing a racehorse named Lady May Z in Northwest Indiana.

New Report on Human Health Risks from Consumption of American Horse Meat
The HSUS issued a report detailing the food safety risks associated with consuming meat that originates in American horses. Horses in the U.S. are primarily used for companionship or competition, therefore they are not treated in the same way as animals raised for human consumption. Horses are commonly given pharmaceuticals that have been banned for use in food-producing animals by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office.

As part of the “Horses on the Hill” event, celebrities, school children and citizen advocates joined Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., sponsor of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S. 1176 / H.R. 2966), at the Capitol to urge legislators to permanently protect our nation’s horses from inhumane slaughter.

USDA Threatened with Suit if Court Order Not Followed Before Horse Slaughter Resumes
