Missouri Voters Oppose Legislation Gutting Prop B, Want Gov. Nixon to Veto Bill
A new public opinion survey conducted by Lake Research Partners has concluded that a majority of Missouri voters do not want their state legislature to repeal or weaken Proposition B, the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act, which was approved in November.

Congressman Grimm Adopts Puppy Rescued from Missouri Puppy Mill
The HSUS and Humane Society Legislative Fund commend Congressman Michael Grimm of N.Y. for adopting a rescued puppy he has named “Sebastian.” Sebastian’s mother and littermates were recently rescued by The HSUS and Columbia Second Chance from a Missouri puppy mill after the facility shut down.

New Florida Poll Reveals Voter Attitudes on Key Animal Welfare Issues
A recent survey reveals that Florida voters strongly oppose trophy hunting of Florida’s recovering black bear population, and support efforts to crack down on puppy mills and stop forcing greyhound tracks to offer excessive amounts of live greyhound racing– three pressing animal welfare issues in the state.

Maryland Senate Approves Kennel Licensing Bill
The HSUS applauds the Maryland Senate for unanimously passing legislation to take a first step towards addressing the issue of puppy mills in Maryland. SB 839, sponsored by Sen. Lisa Gladden, D-Baltimore City, would require commercial dog breeders to be licensed by the counties and require the counties to report licensing information to the state yearly.

Animal Advocates Lobby Oklahoma Lawmakers for Animal Welfare Legislation
Citizens from across Oklahoma participating in The HSUS' Humane Lobby Day 2011 met with lawmakers Monday at the Capitol to urge them to oppose SB773 which would significantly weaken the Commercial Pet Breeders Act which was passed in 2010 to crack down on puppy mills in Oklahoma. Citizen lobbyists will also ask legislators to strengthen penalties for spectators at dogfights.

Animal Advocates Lobby Maryland Lawmakers for Animal Welfare Legislation
The HSUS and Maryland Votes for Animals co-hosted the fourth-annual Maryland Humane Lobby Day at the state capitol in Annapolis. At the event, citizen advocates lobbied their legislators to prevent convicted animal abusers from owning animals for a specified time, promote funding of Maryland spay/neuter programs, and require licensing of large-scale commercial dog breeders.

The HSUS was called in by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department to lead the rescue of 97 dogs and one cat from a Lewisburg, Tenn. property. The dogs were being housed in unsanitary conditions and lacked proper socialization and medical care.
